An incredible 9-month journey through Eastern Africa, inspired Lidia and David to create an extraordinary experience – Misverstand Boutique Farm Lodge – on the Leeufontein farm. The land, initially discovered by David and his family, is nestled near the awe-inspiring Vredefort Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This fascinating landscape was created by the impact of the world’s oldest and largest known meteorite. Now it provides a place of serenity and renewal where you can relax and unwind amidst the beauty of the natural surroundings.
Inspired by the visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, they appointed a team of professionals: Philip De Wet of MLC Quantity Surveyors and Beata Kaleta and Rob Lowe of DSA Architects. Together, they embarked on crafting Misverstand Farm, a modern but simple masterpiece that seamlessly blended with the breathtaking landscape. The name itself, “Misverstand” (Afrikaans for “misunderstanding”), arose from a delightful twist during this initial planning phase.
Following a meticulous restoration in 2020-2021, The Misverstand Boutique Farm Lodge blossomed into a haven of refined luxury enveloped by a 300-hectare farm with abundant bushveld, bird life, and wild animals, offering guests an unparalleled escape in a place steeped in natural history.
At our boutique farm lodge, the architecture blends innovative and iconic design with the natural beauty of the environment. These distinctive features combine serene farm settings with modern luxury. Our team is honoured to have been part of the design and construction process during our recent renovations, ensuring polished, an inspired luxury lodge.
Throughout the property, guests enjoy a visual treat of unique sculptures that have been sourced locally from talented artists in the region. Each sculpture tells its own story of emotion and connection to the land.
David and Lidia are a husband-and-wife team who share a deep love for people, travel, and creating a truly special space. Lidia’s journey, filled with diverse experiences from being raised on a farm to eventually leading sales and marketing at the renowned Sun International hospitality group, has always centred around fostering connections. David, a seasoned finance and hospitality professional, brings a wealth of experience from building resorts across the globe, all while nurturing a passion for the outdoors and adventure. Together, their enthusiasm and warmth have transformed Misverstand into a haven where guests feel right at home—a tangible merging of Lidia and David’s passions. It’s a place that offers exhilaration, tranquillity, renewal, and a chance to reconnect with yourself and nature.
